The XM177 series is a shortened version of the M16 assault rifle, which was adopted exclusively by the U.S. military in the 1960s. A long M16 was prepared for special forces, signallers and air crews in Vietnam's jungle warfare. It features a muzzle device with a suppressor structure called a moderator, equipped to suppress the firing noise and flame that increase with a shorter barrel, and a telescopic aluminum stock similar to the current M4 series. The M653 is a shortened version of the same M16, but equipped with a 14.5-inch barrel which can carry the same bayonet used by the M16.
This Little Armory model kit from Tomytec allows you to build either the XM177E2 or model 653 by selecting the barrel parts. An M16A1-compliant receiver surroundings, an older hand guard slimmer than that of the M4, and the characteristic muzzle are reproduced as much as possible.
